NY Jets 2008 Off Season Needs and Possible Player Moves Draft Tek Mock Simulation
March 3, 2008Wow! Wow! Wow! I do not even know where to start. After doing nothing for months, within 4 days of the free agency and trade period starting “Tangini” have traded Vilma and Robertson for future draft picks, traded current year draft picks for Kris Jenkins, NT, and signed the following free agents: Alan Faneca, LG, Calvin Pace, OLB, and Damien Woodey, RT. Wow!
This has a major impact on the upcoming projected draft picture for the Jets. Anything is possible now. The Jets are now operating from a very flexible position of strength.
The original expectation was that the Jets would be looking for new starters at the following positions: LG, RT, WR. OLB, NT, ILB, and CB. We can cross LG, RT, OLB and NT off of that list. The new list of starters that the Jets might be looking for now looks like this: WR, ILB and CB. None of these looks to be a pressing need — more at potential improvement areas.
I have set the DraftTek team needs matrix to take the best available player at the following positions: RB, WR, ILB, CB and OT. I am not sure if the draft order has been updated for all added draft picks as the model is only updated on official announcements. I have not seen any official announcement of the Robertson trade.
There will be a model run tonight. Plenty to talk about on Tuesday. I am guessing that the DraftTek model will show that with Pick #6, the NY Jets select “Run DMC”.
Let’s see what happens.
I think BPA is the new draft mantra! A what-if is Cowboys giving their two firsts for the Jets 6th to get DMAC, whom I believe we don’t need when TJ gained over 1K with last years line. Just their thinking we COULD take him has them thinking trade.
I think WR and CB should be BPA, then ILB to replace Barton third. I’d like to move up from 15th best WR. We really need depth there.
However, it’s your call and I look forward to it.
NFLDraftsite.com has compensatory picks listed as well as a pretty complete list of trades.
Have you seen the Draft Muncher on TJB?
When I used the 6th and 37th pick referencing your mock draft I got the following response: “Your maths is fine, but when the Jets lost the tie breaker with the other 4-12 teams, they rotate picks in the next two rounds, so we pick 6th, then 5th, then 4th (6, 36, 67).”
Were you aware of this?

I have not seen the Draft Muncher on TJB. What is TJB?
Our Mock Draft order does roll the picks for the four teams that were tied 4 – 12. In Round 1, the order is Atlanta, Oakland, Kansas City, Jets. In Round 2, the order is Oakland, Kansas City, Jets, Atlanta. In Round 3, the order is Kansas City, Carolina (ie. Jets), Atlanta, Patriots (ie. Oakland). When you get to Round 4, the Jets are the first of the 4 – 12 teams to pick.
I am not sure if you are getting crossed up with the draft numbers. This is a problem because of the Patriots losing pick #31. Some drafts skip this number in the first round. We are currently showing the pick as skipped. When the Jets draft they would have had the 38th pick except for the move up one slot because of the rotation of the 4 – 12 teams. The Jets have the 37th slot which is actually the 36th player taken.
I have not found an official announcement of the Robertson trade. There is some talk that the trade is off. Given such, no change to the draft order as Cinci is still shown holding those picks.
